By the end, you’ll be able to…
- Convert BTC and sats without rounding away meaning.
- Separate a market quote from an amount you own.
Three questions to carry into this lesson.
Three different questions
An amount answers how much of an asset exists in a record. A price answers what another party offers in exchange. Purchasing power asks what useful goods that amount can obtain. These are related, but they are not the same. A wallet showing an unchanged number of sats can display a changing local-currency estimate because the price feed moved. Neither display tells you whether a particular shop accepts bitcoin.
Make the unit visible
One BTC contains 100 million sats. In an illustrative ledger, 0.002 BTC is 200,000 sats. If an application silently switches from BTC to another unit, the digits become misleading. Label both the quantity and currency, use consistent decimal places, and keep calculation precision separate from a rounded display. A zero after rounding is not always an actual zero balance.
Read a quote as a dated offer
Imagine two fictional shops pricing the same item at 20,000 and 22,000 sats. Shipping, fees, quality and timing may explain the difference. A conversion estimate also needs a source and timestamp. An old screenshot cannot establish today’s executable price. Our educational examples teach arithmetic; they do not indicate fair value, future returns or what you should buy.
Practice on paper
At an invented conversion rate of $50,000 per BTC, express 0.002 BTC in sats and dollars. If the quote rises to $60,000, which quantity stays unchanged?
I’ve tried it — show the worked answer
0.002 BTC is 200,000 sats. Its illustrative dollar estimate changes from $100 to $120. The 200,000-sat quantity is unchanged; fees, spending or transfers would be separate events.
